Program Description:
The Harbor School opened its doors for the first time in September of 1968. The school is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education, providing an enhanced alternative program to the public-school districts for students with disabilities.
The programs are to meet the academic, functional, social, behavioral and transition needs of the most challenging students. Our school environment is warm, nurturing, and supportive. We currently service ages 5 to 21.
Our related services include nursing, speech, occupational and physical therapy. As of 2010, onsite consultations are available for orthopedic, assistive technology, augmentative communication. Harbor School is happy to offer a Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts as part of the school staff. Harbor School provides mandated and essential “school-to-work” transition services for our 14- to 21-year-old students through the support of a dedicated Work Based Learning Coordinator.
A school social worker is also available to provide individual or group counseling sessions, as well as conduct parent support groups. In collaboration with Rutgers Behavioral health Core (UBHC), Harbor School offers a School-Based Program. This service, at no charge to families, allows us to better address the mental health and psychiatric needs of some of our more challenging developmentally disabled students.
Lastly, the mission of Harbor School is to provide a safe and nurturing educational environment dedicated to the vision that individuals with disabling conditions are entitled to a full and meaningful life.
